Visually Impaired Student Sets His Sights High

Peter Kagwa, who is visually impaired, faced immense challenges from an early age. In fact, Peter and his brother were abandoned by their alcoholic father after the death of their mother. The two small children were left in the house for many days without food before a kind neighbor found them. The neighbor alerted a local probation officer who intervened and took them to a nearby orphanage.

It was around this time, in 2002, that Peter and his brother found a new life within Children of Uganda's sponsorship program. And, new doors of opportunity opened wide!

Peter was paired with a loving sponsor who supported his education. Peter proved himself to be exceptionally hardworking, disciplined and skilled - excelling in his course works and gaining valuable abilities for his future.

For example, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Peter took it upon himself to buy 50 turkeys with his very own savings! He fed them by hand and raised the turkeys until he could resell them for a profit. This helped his family during the pandemic and provided some pocket money for when school reopened.

Given his visual impairment, he was enrolled at New Living Hope Center of the Blind, where he found a supportive environment to complete his education. Peter recently graduated from a 3 year program that instructed him in various craftmaking activities:

Peter has never let his sight hold him back and his hope for the future is to start-up a shoemaking business.
